Design/Teaching Philosophy

Lighting design is a process of exploration and discovery. Alongside scenic and costume design, lighting design is an “art”. By combining the creative, practical and theoretical aspects of light, a lighting designer can become a well-rounded artist. There is no singular way a lighting designer should convey their visual ideas. Through the natural progression of allowing an individual to explore and experiment, under knowledgeable mentors, they will discover their creative “eye”.

There are many phases to lighting design that a theatrical designer must explore. A lighting designer should explore and learn the fundamental elements of design and principles of composition within theatrical designs. Within those basic elements one will draw upon those qualities that will build upon their knowledge as a lighting designer. From there a lighting designer will explore and experience the technology that will help achieve their visual ideas. Finally, a lighting designer will learn to produce their visual imagery, and achieving the essence of lighting design. By allowing a student to develop all these phases throughout their theatrical training, they will have a vast and broad knowledge to step forward with into the professional world.
